Nest Box Set Up & More

What size of Nest Box do I need for my flock?

See our recommended nest box capacity below:

Up to 20 Hens - Small Nest Box

Up to 32 Hens - Medium Nest Box

Up to 45 Hens - Large Nest Box

Up to 75 Hens - X-Large Nest Box

How long does it take to assemble a Nest Box?

We recommend budgeting at least 30 minutes - 1 hour of your time to fully assemble your nest box

How far off the ground should the nest box be mounted?

We recommend mounting your nest box roughly 30” off your coop floor.

Can I double stack my nesting boxes? One on top of the other?

Yes, you absolutely can double stack your nesting boxes. Many of our customers doing this without issue. However, for larger operation (1,000 hens or more) we’ve heard of flocks choosing to lay in either the top or lower nest box (which can create over-crowding in either the top or lower nest). But for smaller flocks you shouldn’t have any issues.

Will my HenGear Nest Box include everything I need?

Yes, your nest box will include everything you need such as:

1. Nest Pad

1. Hanger Set (for securing to wall)

2, 3, or 4. Predator Locks (For Rear Rollout Configuration)

What size cutout do I need in my coop wall for the collection tray to fit through?

What is a Community Style Nest?

All HenGear nest boxes are considered a “Community Style”. Which means there are no dividers walls (aka holes) that you would usually see in traditional nests boxes (such as 2 hole, 4 hole, and 8 hole nest). Traditional divider walls are sadly outdated, because hens love to occupy nest holes that are already occupied with other hens. This can lead to hens overcrowding each other out of their individual nest holes. Overcrowding causes unnecessary stress and can even lead to injury to your chickens.

Thankfully a community style nest box, by simply eliminating the traditional divider walls, drastically reduces the chance of overcrowding occurring.

Can you make custom sized Nest Boxes?

Unfortunately, we do not make custom Nest Boxes. However, we would love to hear any suggestions on how we could improve our Nest Boxes! Email us at support@hengear.com.

Are Predator Locks included in the Nest Boxes?

Yes, all Nest Boxes come with their own set of Predator Locks.

Does the Heat Mat have a Solar Power source?

Unfortunately, our Heat Mat does not support solar power at this time.

Do you include a magnet for the "Back"?

Now that we include predator locks with every nest box the magnet is no longer required. Therefore we no longer include a magnet

Maintenance & Upkeep

How long should the nesting pads last?

Our HenGear nest pads if properly cleaned and taken care of should last several years and even come with a 42 month limited warranty. If your pad is starting to spilt please contact the manufacture to make a warranty claim.

How do I clean my Nest pad?

Clean your nest pad by soaking it in a small tub of hot water with soap for one hour. Remove and water-spray clean before returning to your nest box.

Can I order a spare nest pad for hassle free cleaning?

You absolutely can! Click here to order an Extra Nest Pad!

How often should I clean my nest pad?

Making sure the hens are not sleeping in the nest box overnight by daily raising the red roost bar after collecting is a good way to make the nest pad clean. By doing this, you should only need to clean the nest pad about every 2 months.

General Chicken Questions

How do I train my Hens to use the New Nest Box?

Chickens are remarkably clever beings, and usually adapt quickly to their new nests. However, your hens may have developed a strong bond with their existing nesting box, requiring additional support and assistance. Follow these temporary tips below to ensure a calming transition to your new nest box:

  • Get rid of the old nesting box.
  • Place the new nest box on the coop floor.
  • Make sure the nest box is in the darkest part of the coop.
  • Fill up the nest box with lots of straw or wood shavings.
  • Keep the red curtains open using either magnets or tape.
  • Close off the tray where eggs are usually collected so they gather up in the nest box.
  • Put either fake or real eggs in the nest box after closing off the tray.
  • Keep your hens inside the coop until they finish laying their eggs in the morning.
  • If you see a hen trying to lay in the wrong place, gently put her in the nest box and lift the roost bar until she is finished.
  • Add extra light in the darker spots of the coop because hens like to lay in shady areas.
  • If you find eggs in the wrong spot, move them to the nest box right away. We don't want the others seeing and copying bad habits!
  • Put the bedding from the old nest box into their new one for that familiar touch.
  • Block off any areas where eggs shouldn't be laid.

Remember, these tips are just temporary. Once your hens get the hang of laying eggs in the nest box, you can retire these tricks.
