Over 20 Years of Eggcellence
Howdy, I’m Brice Hitzfield (the 3rd son of the Seven Sons Farms family). We’ve been raising laying hens on our family farm in Roanoke, Indiana for over 20 years. After raising more than 60,000 hens we’ve discovered four areas that were detrimental to our operation.

HenGear Nest Box FAQs
What Nest Box size do I need for my flock?
Here are the maximum number of hens allowed for each size:
- Small: Up to 20 hens
- Medium: Up to 32 hens
- Large: Up to 52 hens
- X-Large: Up to 75 hens
If you have any specific questions or need further calculations based on these limits, feel free to ask!
Is there really enough space for the hens you recommend per box?
Our nest box are designed to support more hens by utilizing a "Community Style" design. Here's how it works:
- No Divider Walls: Traditional nest boxes have divider walls creating individual holes or compartments (e.g., 2-hole, 4-hole, 8-hole). These can cause overcrowding as hens prefer to join other hens in the same space, leading to stress and potential injury.
- Community Style: The community-style nest box eliminates these dividers, providing a single, open space for all the hens. This design mimics the natural behavior of hens, who prefer to lay eggs in communal areas.
- Reduced Overcrowding: Without the dividers, the risk of overcrowding is minimized because the hens have more space to spread out. This reduces stress and the likelihood of injuries.
By adopting this design, the nest box can comfortably accommodate the maximum number of hens for each size without the drawbacks associated with traditional divided nest boxes.
Will my HenGear Nest Box include everything I need?
Yes, your nest box will include:
- Nest Pad: A cushioned pad to provide a comfortable laying area for the hens.
- Hanger Set: A set of hangers to securely attach the nest box to the wall.
If you need further details or assistance with something related to these items, just let me know!
How do I ensure the included nest pad stays clean?
To keep the included nest pad clean, it's important to ensure hens are not sleeping in the nest box overnight. Here are the recommended steps:
- Daily Maintenance: Raise the red roost bar after collecting the eggs each day. This prevents hens from sleeping in the nest box overnight, which helps keep the nest pad cleaner.
- Cleaning Schedule: With proper daily maintenance, you should only need to deep clean the nest pad by soaking in soapy water approximately every 2 months.
By following these steps, you can maintain a clean and hygienic environment for your hens with minimal effort.
How long does it take to assemble to a Nest Box?
We recommend budgeting at least 30 minutes - 1 hour of your time to fully assemble your nest box👍
